I love any opportunity to get my pens out and create a drawing that someone will love. So I was thrilled to be asked to draw a lovely pair of cats called Fern & Keith, what great names for cats, how could I refuse!
I recorded each step of how I built the drawing so you can follow the progress.
I hope you enjoy seeing the process and how the drawing comes to life.
First layer of light grey to create the shape of Fern the cat.
Adding layers of colour and green for the eyes
Creating markings of the cats fur using graphite and fine liner pencil
Create the background colour and shape of Keith
Layering greys over the base colour of Keith
Adding colour to eyes and nose of Keith
Details of markings are added using pencil graphite and fine liner pencil
Once markings are finished on the cat, the garden starts to grow
This is the fun bit where I add pretty flowers and leaves to the background
The petals plants and leaves are added all around the cats
The final details of plant stems and stalks are added to the picture at the last stage
That is how I made a picture of Fern & Keith!

Recently I was thrilled to be asked if my bulldog illustration could be used for promotion for the fantastic ‘Ginger & White’ coffee shop. The design was used on the postcards and on the window coverings as the shop was being refurbished. Most recently it has been made into a fab projection sign for their new Soho Coffee shop. I added the hand rendered font to the design and here is the finished article!

Whenever I do craft fairs in London my little bulldog card always gets recognised as the doggy from the coffee shop, which always makes me smile and I’m glad people remember this little guy. To see more of my doggy designs take a peek at my shop where I am always adding new breeds or I will happily do any pet commissions, which make a fantastic personal gift.

Time for a coffee I think!
After such a long cold winter, and seemingly skipping spring, I felt the need for some sunshine in my life, like everyone else in the UK I’m sure! So I have tried to create a range of designs to remind us of the summer. I hope they bring a smile and make you feel a little bit summery!

March see’s the start of perhaps a little (dare I say) sunshine, hurray! I think a lot of us are becoming a bit bored of the dull grey skies, but at last some brightness to lift everyones spirits. The start of March also see’s the launch of two exclusive card designs I created for Kew Royal Botanical Gardens, and I am so excited about it. The theme for the range is ‘seed heads’ and these two designs were chosen from a selection of illustrations.
This design was inspired by one of my best selling designs in the 2012 card range. I decided to use a similar composition and selected a bold colour palette of teal, cream, and mustard colours to create a contemporary design.
The second design is a simple single stem of ‘cowslip parsley’. I tied in the mustard colour on the buds of the flower head. This delicate seed head structure contrasts nicely next to the ‘mustard seeds’ design.
Of course these designs are only available from Kew Gardens and Wakehurst Place shops, but I have a wide range of botanical themed cards available from my shop perfect for Mothers day this weekend, make sure you take a peek!
So if you are visiting Kew Gardens be sure to have a look around the gift shop which is full of gorgeous flora and fauna themed gifts.
A big THAK YOU to Kew Gardens for asking me to design these cards for them, and for giving me the opportunity and an excuse to get my pencils out!
